Attention, College Students: Back to School Car Shopping

The golden days of summer are ending soon, and then it’s back to school time. If you’re bound for a university this fall, especially one that isn’t close to home, it’s time to ponder buying your first car.

At Bettenhausen Auto Group, we have a lot of experience in guiding prospective car buyers and their parents. We hear the same questions and concerns year after year, so here’s our advice before you visit our lot: Do your homework.

Think about the cars (or SUVs or trucks) that appeal to you, but at the same time develop a broader understanding of all the vehicle possibilities that make sense for a young car-owner-to-be. Think about what your needs are. Will a compact car suffice or would a roomier vehicle be a wiser choice? For example, if you’re a member of your college’s marching band and have a tuba or a bass drum to haul around on a regular basis, the spacious Dodge Challenger or Jeep Compass will better suit your needs than a compact FIAT.

It’s also crucial to consider your finances. It’s one thing to have the ability to purchase, but can you afford to own? There’s insurance, maintenance, and a never ending need to re-fuel a vehicle. In order to get the best vehicle at a manageable price, it is imperative to explore your options.

Don’t be afraid to buy a used car. At the Bettenhausen Automotive Group, used does not mean that a vehicle is old or in poor condition. Our pre-owned inventory often includes vehicles that are just a year or two “old.” More importantly, all our used vehicles go through a rigorous inspection process to ensure that they will serve you well for years to come! Easier on your wallet than and just as stylish as a new car, our used car selection is a great starting point for buying your college car.
If you do opt for a brand new car, make sure to get GAP coverage. GAP stands for Guaranteed Asset Protection, which you’re going to need if a hurricane, tornado, flood, or roadside accident carries your new car to an unintended destination. The car may be gone, but without GAP, you would still be responsible for making payments on it.

Still have questions? Come by Bettenhausen Automotive and we will gladly give you answers.
